Fabrics

Cotton

Malaika uses only the finest quality 400 strand Egyptian cotton. While most Egyptian cotton is exported to other countries for finishing, the unique feature of Malaika's products is that not only is the cotton grown in Egypt, it is also spun, woven and manufactured in Egypt. When you sleep on Malaika sheets, you are experiencing authentic Egyptian cotton.

It is the Egyptian Giza Cotton that is world renowned because of its extra long fiber or "staple". This allows a finer thread to be spun that is very strong. It also is incredibly soft. Not all products labeled Egyptian cotton are legitimate, however. Some may contain only a small percent or a shorter staple Egyptian cotton.

Rest assured that you will know the difference when you sleep on the real thing.

Linen

Linen is produced from the flax plant. Malaika carefully selects the best premium grade Egyptian linen that is soft and lustrous. Linen is very cool to sleep on as it breathes and is very durable. With proper care, your linens will last a lifetime.

Silk

Remarkably, silk has been cultivated and woven in Egypt since the 6th century. From the Akhmim region, this silk is hand-woven and hand dyed. Malaika is very proud of its "Made in Egypt" mandate and is pleased to include Egyptian Akhmim silk in its new collection.

Embroidery Thread

France's prestigious DMC is the source of Malaika's lustrous embroidery thread. Malaika carefully selects the perfect colours to enhance the embroidery design. Testing for colour fastness is conducted by Malaika on every new colour of thread to ensure your precious linens will wash without worry.

Thread Count

Thread count is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the consumer bedding market. Thread count refers to the number of threads in a square inch, however it does not indicate how many plys or strands were used to create the thread. Double or triple plys of cotton can be twisted together to create a single thread creating a thicker fabric which may be desirable.

Thread count is, however, only one part of a superior product. The quality of the cotton, the type of weave, the construction, and the finishing are all important factors of the end product. If poor quality cotton has been used, it does not matter how high the thread count is.

The way the fabric has been woven will influence the feel of the fabric, its sheen, and its durability. Satin sheets contain very high thread counts because they are woven a second time to create a smooth finish. A tightly packed double woven satin fabric is, however, very hot to sleep on, even in cotton, because the fabric does not breathe.

And finally, impeccable construction and finishing processes ensures your Malaika sheets are made to meet the highest quality procedures and craftsmanship, then carefully trimmed and inspected.

Malaika selects the best flat woven (or Percale) fabric of 400 strand premium Giza cotton to ensure you have the most amazing sleep experience. You will know the difference once you have slept on Malaika sheets. The fabric is cool and crisp but soft at the same time.

Care Instructions

Your Malaika bed linens will be a delight to sleep in with proper care. Please read the care instructions on the label of each piece.

Cotton

For cotton bed linens, machine wash in warm water. Use a mild detergent and be sure to dissolve the detergent in the water before putting the linens in the machine. Do not use bleach or fabric softener.

Air dry or machine dry on low temperature. Depending on your dryer, 10 minutes should be sufficient. High temperatures or prolonged drying will cause excessive shrinkage, weaken the fibers and shorten your bed linens lifespan. Remove linens from the dryer while still damp. Smooth and fold or iron on moderate temperature. Iron the embroidery from the wrong side.
